The Newburyport Choral Society's 2019 Spring Concert, Voices of America will celebrate the contributions of three outstanding American composers of the 20th and 21st centuries - Aaron Copland, Leonard Bernstein, and Utah composer Andrew Maxfield. Through the inspiring music of these composers, our audience will be connected to different dimensions of the best of the American spirit.

Copland's Old American Songs features a highly entertaining musical style, blending folk art and musical theater, and capturing themes, melodies, and rhythms that are uniquely American.

Bernstein's dramatic Chichester Psalms juxtaposes vocal part writing most commonly associated with Church music with the Judaic liturgical tradition. Written in a jazzy and contemporary style, Bernstein specifically called for the text to be sung in Hebrew. Throughout his life, Bernstein was known for bringing people together regardless of their religions, origins, and aspirations in life. Implicit in Chichester Psalmsis the message of peace and reconciliation.

This special program also features the New England Premiere of Utah composer Andrew Maxfield's, Celebrating Wendell Berry in Music, based on a collection of texts by this beloved American poet. Maxfield mirrors Copland?s style of composing, with the music stemming from Berry's reflection on the values that are uniquely American: hope, exploration, an appreciation for the land upon which we live, and an emphasis on the resilience of the American spirit.

NCS will perform under the baton of NCS Music Director Dr. George Case.

Ticket Information: General Admission - doors open an hour before the concert. Please arrive early to ensure a good seat.

NOTE: In the event of a cancellation, the performance will be rescheduled for Monday May 6 at 8:00 PM.
